Vacationing In The Maldives

Maldives is formerly a Sultanate under Dutch and British protection, the Maldives are now a republic.  Under international pressure, free and fair elections were finally held in 2008.
The Tsunami of December 26, 2004 caused extensive damage to the Maldives - of a population of only 290,000, over a third was directly affected by the tsunami and more than 15,000 people were left homeless.  The economic damage alone was over 62% of the GDP or US$470 million.
The immediate response from international donors and agencies mobilized more than US$400 million in aid after the disaster, much of which was used to help misplaced persons rebuild their homes and infrastructure damaged by the waves.  As of December 24, 2010, six years after the tsunami, the number of persons living in temporary shelters had fallen from 15,000 to only 1,600 people.

Tourism, Maldives largest industry, accounts for 20% of GDP and more than 60% of the Maldives' foreign exchange receipts.  Over 90% of government tax revenue comes from import duties and tourism-related taxes.  Over 600,000 tourists visited the islands in 2006. Fishing is a second leading sector.  The Maldivian Government began an economic reform program in 1989 initially by lifting import quotas and opening some exports to the private sector.  Subsequently, it has liberalized regulations to allow more foreign investment.  Agriculture and manufacturing continue to play a minor role in the economy, constrained by the limited availability of cultivable land and the shortage of domestic labor.  Most staple foods must be imported. Industry, which consists mainly of garment production, boat building, and handicrafts, accounts for about 18% of GDP.  Maldivian authorities worry about the impact of erosion and global warming on their low-lying country; 80% of the area is one meter or less above sea level.

Note that the weekend in the Maldives runs from Friday to Saturday, during which banks, government offices and many shops are closed.   You will NOT notice this at the resorts though, except that lunch hours may be shifted for Friday prayers.

The Maldives are tropical, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures around 30°C throughout the year.   However, rainfall increases considerably during the April-October southwest monsoon, particularly from June to August.

The Maldives are formed of 26 atolls, or atholhu in Dhivehi — the source of the English word. These are not single islands, but giant ringlike coral formations hundreds of kilometers wide that have fragmented into countless islands.

The Maldives have a remarkably easy visa policy -- Everybody gets a free 30-day visa on arrival, provided that they have a valid travel document, a ticket out and proof of sufficient funds, defined as either a confirmed reservation in any resort or US$100 + $50/day in cash.  This can be extended up to 90 days at Male, the capital of the Maldives, but you will need to indicate where you're staying for that long.

Importing alcohol, pork or pornography (very broadly defined) into the Maldives is forbidden and all luggage is X-rayed on arrival.  On the way out, note that exporting sand, seashells or coral is also forbidden.

Practically all visitors arrive at Malé International Airport located on Hulhulé Island right next to the capital Male. The airport is served by a wide array of flights to China, India, Sri Lanka, Dubai and major airports in South-East Asia, as well as an increasing number of charters from Europe. Many flights stop in Colombo (Sri Lanka) on the way.

Gan Airport which is on the southern atoll of Addu, also serves an international flight to Milan several times a week.

Departure taxes are included in your ticket.

British Airways now flies directly from London Gatwick to Male 3 times a week (Sunday, Tuesday and Friday)
Cathay Pacific Airlines flies 4 times a week from Hong Kong (Wed, Thu, Sat, Sun)
Singapore Airlines flies daily direct from Singapore to Male, with late night timings.
Turkish Airlines flies directly from Istanbul Ataturk to Male 5 times in a week.
Emirates flies direct from Dubai to Male', twice a day.
Austrian Airlines flies between Vienna and Male once a week.

There are no regular passenger boats to the Maldives.   Even yachts usually steer clear, as navigating around the reefs is hazardous and permits are expensive.

Getting around in the Maldives takes three forms: boats, sea planes (air taxis) and private yachts. The boats are the Maldivian equivalent of a car, while planes and private yachts are mainly reserved for tourists.

Air taxis and boats prefer not to operate at night, so if you arrive at the airport after dark and are going to a distant resort, you may have to spend the night in Male or at the airport hotel in Hulhule. Private transfers, though expensive can be opted for resort transfers, instead of spending the whole night at Male.  Private transfers could cost anywhere between US$500-800.   On the way back, there may also be a significant gap between the time your transfer arrives and your flight departure. Check with your resort or travel agent.

Public ferries and cargo boats are available for more independent-minded and budget-conscious travelers.

Independent travel to inhabited islands other than Male requires an Inter Atoll Traveling Permit, and receiving one requires Rf.10, a copy of your passport and — the hard part — an invitation from a resident of the island you wish to visit.   Permits are not necessary for the organized island-hopping tours arranged by resorts and liveaboards.

No point in the Maldives is more than 90 minutes away by plane from Male, and visitors to the more far-flung resorts use air taxi services.   There are two main operators: Maldivian Air Taxi, with red and white planes, and Trans Maldivian Airways, with yellow and blue planes.  The services are largely identical and take around 15 passengers.

The taxi boats generally take tourists to and from the islands in the North and South Male atolls. They come in all different shapes and sizes depending on the quality of the resort you stay in — the Four Seasons has a large enclosed motor cruiser with drinks and food, while the lesser resorts have open sided dhoni fishing boats.Online trafer booking can be made on Atolltransfer.

Maldivian Dhivehi, a close relative of Sinhala (spoken in Sri Lanka) but with borrowings from Urdu, Hindi, Arabic and many other languages, is the official language.  It is written in a remarkable hybrid script called Thaana, which uses Arabic and Indic numbers as the base of the alphabet, written from right to left with Arabic vowel signs.  The script is thought to have originated as a secret code for writing magical formulas so that outsiders can NOT read them, which would also explain why the ordering of the alphabet is, as far as linguists can tell, completely random!

English is widely spoken, particularly by government officials and those working in the tourism industry.  English is the language of instruction in schools, which means that you will be able to communicate with the locals with varying degrees of difficulty.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Occupying a large chunk of Teton Village in the northwest corner of the valley, the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is a vacation destination unto itself.  The primary resort area in the valley, this property boasts several brand new hotels and timeshares, not to mention a variety of dining options.
However, the main reason people visit the resort is to take advantage of the skiing; located at the base of Rendezvous Mountain, the resort offers prime access to 2,500 acres of ski runs and 4,139 feet of vertical drop. And with an annual average of 400 inches of snowfall, it's no wonder why recent visitors are saying that this is the best ski area in the country.

Skiing is NOT the only activity here.  Once the runs close for the day, you can spend the evenings enjoying a horse-drawn sleigh ride.  During the summertime, the resort offers visitors numerous opportunities to hike and mountain bike.  Many visitors also say that a ride on the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram is a must, no matter the season. The tram runs to the top of Rendezvous Mountain, allowing for breathtaking views of the Teton Mountains.  Be sure to look for the discount coupons in the local Jackson Hole newspaper.

The lifts are open every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between late November and early April.  Although you do NOT have to pay to explore the resort, lift tickets cost about $95 a day, depending on the month.  The Jackson Hole Aerial Tram is open from 9 a.m. to either 5 or 6 p.m., and tickets cost around $25 for adults (hours and rates vary by season). Dining In New Orleans

New Orleans is the place to forget about your diet and enjoy the rich trifecta of butter, cream and oil. While traditional southern flavors abound here, New Orleans is most famous for its unique Creole and Cajun cuisines, which feature a combination of French, Spanish, Italian and African cooking elements. Restaurants featuring traditional New Orleans dishes, such as red beans and rice and po'boys, a sub usually filled with meat or fried seafood, can be found throughout the city of New Orleans.  Both Cajun and Creole jambalaya, a rice dish made with meat, vegetables and Creole spices, and gumbo, a hearty stew consisting of meat or seafood and vegetables, are also staple entrees on many New Orleans menus.  When you are craving something sweet, you will find that New Orleans has you covered there, too.  Beignets square pieces of fried dough smothered in powdered sugar can be found at the one of the city's most famous coffee shops (and a tourist attraction in its own right), Café Du Monde.

New Orleans has many famous chefs, including Emeril Lagasse, John Besh and Susan Spicer, own and operate restaurants in the city.  The French Quarter is home to numerous Creole restaurants, as well as several authentic French restaurants.  But as I said, restaurants in the French Quarter are expensive.  Popular eateries are clustered in the Central Business and Warehouse districts.  I know, since I've gone to New Orleans several times - I can't get enough of the food!  If you want to mingle with New Orleans residents, dine at the budget-friendly restaurants in Mid-city or Uptown.  For a comprehensive sampling of all of the city's mouth-watering cuisine, consider visiting during one of New Orleans' food festivals.  Just keep in mind that the rich flavors can be a shock to your digestive system, so pace yourself.

National Park Service In The US

In 1872, the US government created the first National Park when it set aside a vast tract of territory for preservation under the Yellowstone Act. In 1916, it created the National Park Service under the Federal Department of the Interior. Since then, the National Park Service (NPS) has established governance over 284 sites containing 83.6 million acres (34 million hectares).

Some of the areas under the NPS are called National Parks, some are called National Monuments or National Historical Sites. They range in size from tiny areas that include a single historical building to the immense 13.2 million acre Wrangell St. Elias National Park in Alaska.

Nearly every National Park includes a visitor information center staffed by friendly courteous park rangers eager to help guests enjoy their visit. Most of them also include an array of facilities such as: roads, trails, parking lots, restrooms, snackbars, restaurants, hotels, camping sites, guided tours, horse or mule rides, and educational lectures. The quantity and quality of the visitor facilities vary from park to park. The most popular parks contain the widest assortment of facilities, but they often suffer from overuse. Some of the less popular parks offer only minimal facilities.

The National Park Service maintains a large web site that provides a lot of great information about each of the parks under their control: http://www.nps.gov The accommodations, camping, restaurants and other tourist facilities in each park are usually managed by an outside contractor, but reservation for most can be made on the Internet via links from the NPS web pages.

If you do not really want to rough it, you might consider a hotel.  You will find the lowest prices for hotels at http://www.standardvacationfinder.com If renting an RV, I might suggest CLICKING HERE!  I personal think you will be thankful that you did rent an RV!

If you plan on visiting more National Parks, then I suggest that you purchase a pass.

Senior Pass - Cost $10
US citizens or permanent residents age 62 or older can obtain this lifetime pass only at a National Park. Like the Annual Pass, the Senior Pass covers the pass holder and accompanying passengers in a private vehicle at parks that charge a per-vehicle fee, and at parks with a per-person fee, it covers the pass holder plus three passengers (children under 16 years of age are admitted free). Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona is one of the most beautiful vacation locations in the USA. It has been revered as a magnificent spiritual haven since prehistoric times. Native Americans have been coming to Sedona for their religious ceremonies, their spiritual awakenings, their rites of passage and their weddings for hundreds of years.

Red sandstone cliffs rise a thousand feet above the valley floor. Buttes, mesas and pinnacles of rock rise throughout the valley. Everywhere the rocks have been eroded into fantastic shapes resembling giant fortresses, towers, pinnacles and other exotic visages. The village of Sedona is located in the midst of this scenic splendor surrounded by cascading mountain streams, lush green meadows, and forested hillocks all dominated by the imposing red rock formations.

Sedona is located in northern Arizona just a 30 minute drive southwest of Flagstaff and less than 90 minutes from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is only two hours drive north of Phoenix. You can easily fly to Flagstaff or Phoenix and drive to Sedona. The valley is about 4,500 feet (1.500 meters) above sea level. The climate is semi arid, so it gets little rain or snow, but it has a plentiful supply of water from the nearby mountains. Summers are a bit milder and winters a bit colder than the low altitude deserts near Phoenix.

A wide selection of hotels (check out http://www.standardvacationfinder.com) is available in the village of Sedona with some exclusive resorts located in nearby canyons and some tourist cabins and camping along Oak Creek Canyon. There are plenty of restaurants, groceries, gas stations, boutiques and souvenir shops in Sedona. It has a small airfield located atop a mesa overlooking the town. The airport offers some airplane and helicopter tours of the area and a limited number of charter flights to nearby locations.

The scenery in and around Sedona is spectacular and most of it is easily seen from the various roads throughout the area. Oak Creek Canyon is the main entry to Sedona from Flagstaff. This road follows Oak Creek through a narrow defile of colorful rock walls as is cascades beneath towering pine trees. In many places, this canyon is only a few hundred feet wide (100 yards) with red, pink, brown and white rock walls rising a thousand feet (350yards) or more on either side.

Instead of staying in a hotel, you might consider RVing.  Our site at http://www.standardvacationfinder.com also offers RVs.

For the more adventureous, you will find walking, hiking, bicycle touring and horseback riding are some favorite activities for visitors to Sedona. You can rent mountain bikes or riding horses at several locations in and around the town. The rangers at the visitor centers will provide you with free maps indicating all of the trails and will cheerfully offer advice on the best routes.

Telunas Beach Resort Review

Are you looking to get away from the hustle of city life? Is it your desire to unplug from technology and breath in clean air and bask in the warmth of the sun? At Telunas Resorts Private Island (owned by Telunas Beach Resort you can do just that.

This eco-friendly resort offers rest and relaxation to single, couple, or family travellers alike. The resort is nestled on the edge of its very own island a short hour and a half longboat ride from Batam, Indonesia. The pristine beaches and infinity pool are perfect to catch up on reading, sunbathing, or chatting with family or friends.

Each over the water villa is truly a delight. They are spacious and comfortable and decorated beautifully. Since they are over the water there is no need for air-conditioning. There is a strong, cool, continuous cross breeze and in the evening the need for a duvet.

Each villa has a large sitting area, loft that sleeps additional people, a large master bedroom with a balcony, and a modern bathroom with a rainwater showerhead. A water cooler with hot/cold water is provided in each room along with beach towels and daily cleaning and turndown service.  The only disadvantage is that there are only 10 villas!

Falling asleep to the lull of the ocean and waking up to views of tropical sunrises 10 feet from your bed is glorious on this one of a kind resort.

The single restaurant is an open aired, large area just off reception and has a very tropical island feel. It’s not uncommon for guests to join each other for meals as the atmosphere begs friendliness. Executive Chef Surya Kusuma, who happily strolls from table to table during each meal making sure each guest is satisfied with his or her food, lovingly prepares the daily menus.

The concept for meals on the island is unique. A chalkboard is set up providing a wide range of choices for breakfast and dinner. For lunch a local dish is the only choice but never disappointing. If guests have special culinary requirements, the chef will happily prepare their food accordingly with proper notice.

To break up a day of relaxation (if you can imagine wanting to do that) the resort offers activities like jungle hikes or tours of nearby islands and fishing villages. Each morning a list of daily activities can be found near the reception desk and the staff happily makes all arrangements. The beauty of these activities is that they are all free of charge so there is no excuse not to take advantage of the opportunity to explore.

Other activities include a cooking class in which the chef demonstrates how to cook traditional Indonesian dishes. At the end of the class each participant gets to eat the fruit of their labors.

The resort also offers in room spa services. There are several traditional massages to choose from but it is highly recommended to try the Telunas Signature Spa. It’s a unique treatment given by expert, local masseurs and with the lapping water and cool breezes off the ocean just outside your room it’s that much more relaxing.

If eco-friendly, rustic luxury is something you’re looking for Telunas Resorts Private Island is the place to go. Time truly strands still on this beautiful gem floating in the seas of Indonesia. With her exceptional service, friendly staff, and warm, welcoming beaches you’ll leave with a sense of peace and a wonderful group of new friends!

Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort

New and amazing hotels are being built every day, with architects pushing the boundaries of what is possible each time. China in particular, continues to impress, with a string of glamorous and striking hotels opening in the last 12 months.

With an inventory of more than 800,000, at HotelsCombined  I'd spend all day looking at incredible images and dreaming of the hotels that I’d like to visit. I picked out my top Chinese hotel which is more futuristic hotels than most.

Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort :

Shaped like a horse shoe and lit up brilliantly at night, the Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort is unlike any other hotel. The hotel itself is a piece of art; the lobby is lit with Swarovski chandeliers and gorgeous marble floors, while the rooms are impeccably furnished.

The hotel is located at the foot of Huzhou Bianshan Mountain, Changxing, on the edge of the Taihu Lake – the still waters of the lake reflect the hotels incredible arching shape. With onsite restaurants, a spa and wellness center, fitness center and all of the technological facets you could possibly need; you will have very little need to leave the vicinity of the hotel.

Why Visit San Diego

The next time someone tells you, "San Diego Is Just For Vacations", or you have to buy a $75 fan because your PB apartment was built in the 40s and has no air conditioning and it's July, take a moment to think about all the things San Diego does better than anywhere else. 20 of those things are listed below:

1. Weather

It's the best weather in the nation. Possibly the world. People do NOT even argue about this, they just complain about it if they do NOT live here.

2. Happiness

San Diego consistently ranks as one of the happiest cities in the country.

3. Biotech

Between UCSD, the Salk Institute, and more than 600 biotech companies, the city has developed new medicines and search for cancer cures, which is impressive concentration considering the aforementioned weather.

4. Craft beer

Other places do it. Many of them do it well. But the preponderance of extraordinary craft beer from and found in San Diego is unmatched.

5. Natural splendor

Parks, beaches, hiking trails, coves, lakes, estuaries, nearby mountains, bays...

6. Military

The other reason to go to Miramar Road besides breweries and buying furniture.

7. Attractive people

The Beach Boys could have easily just made the song "San Diego Girls".

8. Fish tacos

Deep-fried or grilled, mahi mahi or halibut, flour or corn tortilla, white sauce or salsa fresca or both, the rest of the country often imitates but never quite gets it right.

 9. Animals in captivity

Touch starfish. Ride the Skyfari. Feed butterflies. Let lorikeets land (and poop) on you. San Diego's zoo/aquarium-related activities are just better than other people's. Plus, they have pandas, polar bears, and Komodo dragons and stuff.

10. Sunsets

There're science-based reasons (including pollution, but hey, whatever!), that give especially purple/pink/blue/"#magical"/"#incredible" sunsets. Plus, there's the whole palm tree/power line combo, the green flash, and piers and beaches from which to watch.

11. Taco Tuesdays

Actually, just expand this to "finding any excuse to drink discounted margaritas".

12. Decorating a statue like it is a real person

From tutus to Cookie Monster outfits, the Cardiff Kook (aka the Silver Surfer statue on Highway 101) is always looking fab.

13. Drinking near the ocean

Regardless of where you do it, drinking near the ocean is one of the best activities ever.

14. Surf dialect

"Dude, do you want to paddle out at Black's tomorrow? It's supposed to be 4-5 with this NW swell."

15. Being the best city in California

San Diego was the first city in California. It is also the second largest. San Diego is the closest with Mexico. And San Diego's dining and nightlife is on par with most anybody else's.
